Spring is the season when motorcycle enthusiasts pull their rides out of storage and hit the road. Before you do, it’s important to make sure your motorcycle can handle the trip. One way to avoid significant motorcycle repairs is through routine maintenance, especially at the start of riding season. Here’s how you can get your ride ready.

How to Prep Your Motorcycle for the Season

1. Change the Fluids

Starting with the fuel tank, flush and change the fluids in your bike. Stale gasoline will cause a rough ride. If your bike has a high-compression engine, degraded fuel quality can also lead to more severe motorcycle repairs. Check other fluids, including coolant and brake fluid, for changes in appearance and replace any that look dirty or discolored.

2. Check the Tires

motorcyclesThe air pressure in tires decreases during cold temperatures. Low tire pressure can make motorcycles challenging to handle, cause tires to develop flat spots from sitting in storage, and escalate uneven wear and tear during a ride. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure levels and perform a thorough visual inspection of the entire wheel. If you’re concerned, an auto technician will assess your tires and advise whether you need replacements.

3. Test the Controls

Ensure that your vehicle is in optimal shape by looking for corrosion, frayed cables, and cracked hoses or coverings. Test the steering, brakes, throttle, clutch, turn signals, flashers, and lights. If your motorcycle doesn’t respond or if you hear odd noises when it does, take your bike in for a more thorough inspection by a certified expert.
