With temperatures rising throughout Texas, critters like centipedes and millipedes may find themselves inside your home. Though many people confuse the two because of their physical similarities, these two arthropods are not the same. If you’ve spotted one inside, use the guide below to determine which has infiltrated your property before calling pest control for removal.

Centipedes

Most people recognize centipedes as having slender bodies with two long antennae and lots of legs. In fact, house centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, which can total anywhere from eight to 30 legs. They grow up to 12 inches, but most of the species found in Texas are relatively small.

Though some types of centipedes are venomous, they are all carnivorous and will, in times of stress, bite humans. Reactions to a centipede bite are similar to a bee sting, but they can be extremely painful, so it is necessary to contact pest control if they find their way inside your home. Most centipedes prefer dryer environments, but some species will live in damp areas, such as bathrooms or closets.

Millipedes

Millipedes also have long bodies and plenty of legs, but they have two pairs per body segment instead of one. They can be as small as one centimeter or grow up to 10.5 inches. Unlike centipedes, though, millipedes do not bite or sting; their diet largely consists of the roots of small plants or decaying organic matter.

However, they protect themselves from predators by secreting a smelly, sticky substance from glands between their body segments. They also protect themselves by curling into a tight coil when threatened, which makes them easy to identify. They prefer to live in dark, damp areas outside but will seek shelter indoors in large numbers after heavy rains or periods of drought.
