Becoming a foster parent is a huge commitment, one that can be taxing both physically and mentally. Therapy is beneficial for many families while they’re adjusting, but there are also steps people in the community can take to support foster parents. Here are a few things you can do to make the transition easier for these families.

How to Support Foster Families Immediately After Placement

Physical Needs

The days that follow the addition of a new child can be very hectic. There may be behavioral, emotional, or physical issues, as well as therapy sessions and doctors’ appointments that often disrupt the family’s former routine. Parents have to make new schedules and put them into place, on top of the daily responsibilities of parenthood. To help foster parents adapt to these changes, consider cooking a meal or two, running an errand, cleaning/organizing their home, or gathering supplies for the child. These are simple tasks that can make a huge difference.

Emotional Needs

As these new schedules come into play, parents can often feel overwhelmed emotionally. One of the most important things you can do is be a good listener. If you hear of a need, try to fill it. Offer respite or babysitting so they can get therapy, make arrangements so they get a date night occasionally, or take the biological children on an outing so the parents have one-on-one time with their foster child.

What Are the Constant Needs?

therapyAs parents get used to their new children and the schedules of life, the physical needs mentioned above may not be needed quite so often. However, there will always be a need for emotional support. Some weeks or even days are going to be harder than others. Just as getting new children may be difficult, having them leave after connections are made can be even harder. Make sure to show your support by listening to their needs, even if they just need to vent over coffee. Your presence alone can do plenty to brighten their day and ease their mind.
