PTSD occurs when a person has lived through a traumatic occurrence, such as sexual assault, physical abuse, or military service. If you have a loved one with this condition, you may be aware of the trigger—but this isn’t always the case, which can make their seemingly inexplicable behavior all the more troubling. Find out how friends and family members of people with PTSD can identify signs and offer help.

Causes & Symptoms

Symptoms of PTSD include experiencing upsetting thoughts or memories related to the trauma, recurrent nightmares, and flashbacks. The body may respond physically to these stressful recalls, increasing the heart rate and causing sweating. People with PTSD may make an effort to avoid thoughts and conversations about the trauma—another red flag.

Patients may also exhibit signs of so-called hyperarousal. They are jumpy, easily startled, experience problems concentrating, and have trouble falling asleep. In some cases, they may become irritable and show outbursts of anger. As a loved one, these reactions can be difficult to witness.

Treatment Options

PTSDLuckily, there are many ways to address PTSD. Each individual’s needs are different and precise treatment will depend on the diagnosis. The ultimate aim of any approach is to help patients find healthy ways to handle anxiety, manage emotions, face flashbacks, and identify and cope with triggers.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is one option and focuses on changing the way people respond to their external environment and internal thoughts. Exposure therapy is an alternative method and works by having patients confront their triggers. Another option is acceptance and commitment therapy, which focuses on encouraging people to seek out meaning, rather than avoid pain.
