Whether you’re moving for a job opportunity or have found a new program that will better further your child’s academic future, there are many reasons to enroll them in a new day care. However, this process can be stressful for kids, who have maybe formed friends and developed a routine at their old school. This, in turn, can make it stressful for you. The guide below offers advice for making the switch as easy on everyone as possible.

How to Smooth Your Child’s Move to a New Day Care

1. Say Goodbye

Your little one may have grown an attachment to their past day care. Let them say goodbye to the location and everyone there as a way to prepare for the new facility. You could even work with the child to create goodbye cards to help them process the change. If you are moving, these notes can include the new address or phone number, so their friends can stay in contact.

Some day cares will let parents or guardians spend a day with their child. This way, the toddler can turn to you for comfort as they navigate the unknown for a few hours. Then, they’ll feel more at home the next time they attend.

3. Follow the Routine

Children thrive on routine to a large extent. If it’s possible, mimic the new day care’s schedule at home. For example, on the weekends, feed them lunch and lay them down for a nap at approximately the same time.

4. Pack a Comfort Item

Many kids have a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy that they like to tote around the house. Let them bring this belonging to school so they can gain some calm if they are nervous about their first few days.
