The phrase “foundation problems” is a worrisome one for every property owner that they hope they’ll never hear. Though some foundation issues can be severe and very expensive to repair, you’ll limit the damage and cost of foundation repair if you catch it as early as possible. All homeowners should know the early signs of foundation issues so they can address it while it’s still a minor concern.

Red Flags It’s Time for Foundation Repair

1. Poorly Fitting Doors & Windows

foundation repairAs a house shifts, the frames around doors and windows will move as well. As a result, the windows and doors will not fit properly in their frames anymore. You may not be able to open or close them all the way, or it will at least take some effort to force it into place. Double doors won’t align properly, making it difficult to close or lock them.

2. Cracks

Cracks are one of the most common signs of foundation issues. If you do see these in your home, keep in mind that all cracks are not a cause for concern. For example, hairline cracks in mortar, cracks at an L-shape section, or vertical cracks are all typical as a result of curing concrete. However, any stair step cracks in your masonry joints, cracks big enough to stick a pinky finger into, and horizontal cracks are signs of more serious issues.

3. Uneven Floors

Floors should be level, so any that are not indicate you may need foundation repair. An issue could cause your floor to sag and squeak in certain areas. The entire floor in a home may become uneven as well; you can test this by placing a level on the floor or setting down a ball to see if it rolls on its own.
