If you haven’t turned off the heat already, you will soon. In other words, it’ll be time to turn on the AC before you know it. Since the system has been out of use for months, though, it will need a little maintenance first. While it’s wise to arrange for an HVAC contractor to inspect everything before you turn on the air conditioning, there are a few steps you can take yourself to prepare the unit for summer.

3 Steps to Take Before Using the AC for the Season

1. Replace the Filters

The average homeowner should be replacing their HVAC filters every 30 to 90 days. If you have pets, kids, housemates who smoke, or severe allergies, you will need to replace the filters every four to six weeks. Otherwise, replacing them at the start of every season should be sufficient.

2. Clear Away Debris

Otherwise, they will obstruct airflow, forcing the system to work a lot harder than necessary. After clearing the area—including any clogged drains—inspect each unit closely for damage. If you notice any issues, call an HVAC contractor to conduct the necessary repairs before the start of the season.

3. Test the Unit

It’s wise to test your air conditioner long before temperatures reach record highs. This will ensure you have plenty of time to fix it if there are any problems. To test the unit, start by turning the thermostat to OFF. Then, make sure the power at the disconnect box and the main panel is on. Finally, turn the thermostat to COOL. It should become clear in a matter of hours if the system is running properly. If it’s not, call an HVAC contractor for help with troubleshooting.
