With spring around the corner, checking that air conditioning is ready for the warmer weather is a priority for homeowners. There are a few items to inspect to ensure your unit gets you through the next few months. Here is a checklist to get started.

Springtime Checklist for Your Air Conditioner

1. Check Filters

Every time the seasons switch a filter inspection is in order. Clean filters are necessary for ensuring quality, dust-free air is circulating in your home. It also helps air flow freely so that obstructions do not cause your air conditioning’s components to overwork. If you have a reusable filter, simply purge dust, grime, and dirt. Replace disposable ones so your spring starts off the right way.

2. Clear Outdoor Units

You don’t want anything interfering with the outside compressor’s function, as this will cause a problem with airflow and correct temperatures inside. Make sure coils are clean so nothing is disrupting the heat transfer process, and when you begin any spring gardening, steer clear of your equipment.

3. Dust Indoor Components

Dust any vents and returns so particles, pet dander, and other allergens will not blow around your living space. Also, check indoor equipment for any grime that may have settled during the winter months. Not only will this boost indoor air quality, but it will also protect your air conditioning system and prolong its life span.

4. Replace Damaged Parts

Walk around your equipment, and check for any rusted or broken parts. Inspect both indoor and outdoor panels, and ensure there are no loose electrical connections. If anything is wrong with electrical panels or components, call your HVAC contractor or licensed electrician for help. Also, inspect for any missing or damaged insulation on pipes leading to and from the equipment.

5. Inspect Drainage

The hose of the condensate line is a critical part of your air conditioning and is usually connected to a drip tray that catches condensation. Keeping this drainage hose clear and in working order avoids moisture backups and flooding that will occur if the tray and drain are not connected or misaligned.
