When it’s time to install a new roof on your home, you’ll discover there are a wide range of materials to choose from. Advanced technology has made most of these options beneficial in numerous ways. Use the guide below to find out how the most commonly installed materials might suit your needs.

What Are the Most Commonly Used Roofing Materials?

1. Asphalt Shingles

The most popular roofing material used today is asphalt shingles. This is largely to due with how economical they are to produce and because they work well in almost all environments. While they seem like they are entirely composed of asphalt, usually the base of the material consists of either mostly fiberglass or organic materials. Fiberglass is the more desirable option for most homeowners because it is lighter, thinner, has a higher fire rating, and is more environmentally friendly. However, both varieties come in numerous colors and styles. In fact, many manufacturers have lines that mimic other materials, including wood shakes, slate, and tile.

2. Metal Roofsnew roof

When you want a new roof with a long lifespan, look to metal roofing structures. They have an expected lifespan of 40 to 70 years, and many will also come with a 30-to-50-year warranty. They are also light weight, which means you don’t have to worry about adding extra roof stabilization, and have rust-proof coatings to withstand the elements. However, expect to pay more for metal panels or shingles than you would for asphalt.

3. Built-up Roofing

Also known as BUR, this material is over a century old and still a popular choice for low-sloped roofs. They consist of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics, and then topped with a surfacing mixture of aggregates, glass-fiber, hot asphalt, and either aluminum or elastomeric coatings. While it is a very durable and low-maintenance material, BUR membranes tend to only last 10 to 15 years. They are also rather difficult to install and incredibly heavy, often requiring reinforcement beams.
