According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of American adults have some form of gum disease. With this statistic in mind, dentists highly encourage every patient to adhere to a strict oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing twice a day. Additionally, avoid or limit your intake of the following foods as they can lead to gum disease and other oral health issues.

4 Foods & Drinks That Can Lead to Gum Disease

1. Soda

Sodas are both acidic and high in sugar, making them extremely harmful to your teeth and gums. Mouth bacteria feed off sugar and can lead to plaque buildup at the gum line and in turn, irritation that leads to gum disease. Additionally, the acidity in this beverage can simultaneously wear down enamel and lead to decay.

2. Popcorn

Gum DiseasePopcorn can be a tasty and low-calorie snack; however, consuming this treat regularly can irritate your gums. The husks in the center of each kernel can easily become lodged between teeth. Since these pieces are thin and sharp, they can scrape sensitive gums and create abscesses or an infection. If you decide to eat popcorn, brush and floss immediately after consumption, and avoid eating hard, half-popped pieces, which can crack teeth.

3. White Bread

White bread and other starchy carbs like pasta quickly turn into sugar, which promotes mouth bacteria and a buildup of plaque. Beyond the ingredients that make you prone to gum disease, the sticky texture of these foods when chewed can remain stuck between teeth and lead to gum inflammation.

4. Fruit Juice

While fruit can be an excellent source of vitamins and much-needed nutrients, consuming fruit juice regularly can be detrimental to your gum health. This is because many fruit juices on the market, which are already high in sugar and acidity, have added sweeteners. Much like soda, this combination can result in plaque buildup and worn down enamel that allows gum disease to set in.
