Welders may not be considered artists in the traditional sense, but they have produced some seriously impressive works. In fact, some of the most historically significant structures would not have been possible without the forging of metal. Here are just a few of the most notable welding achievements still in existence today.

3 Major Welding Projects You Can Still See Today

1. The Empire State Building

Completed in 1931, the Empire State Building is comprised of 102 stories and, with its antenna, stands 1,454 feet tall. Thousands of workers, many of them welders, played a role in erecting what stood as the tallest building in the world until 1972. Because the Great Depression had started just prior to construction, the welders were eager to prove their worth so they could keep their jobs, and they worked at an alarming pace, erecting four and a half stories per week.

2. The Millennial Park Cloud Gate

welderLocated in Chicago and affectionately call “The Bean” by locals, this public sculpture was designed by Anish Kapoor and fabricated by Performance Structures, Inc. The fact that it has nearly invisible weld joints is perhaps the most impressive aspect of this massive sculpture. Inspired by a drop of liquid mercury, the design was shined to a mirror-like sheen and remains just as flawless and reflective to this day.

3. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System

Comprised of 11 pump stations and 800 miles of feeder pipeline, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) was completed in 1977. Engineers faced considerable challenges while working on the project because of the extreme cold and difficult terrain. They were eventually successful, though, and by 2010, the pipeline had shipped nearly 16 million barrels of oil.
