Immediately after well drilling is completed, a well's yield is usually high enough to cover all of your water needs. But sometimes a well isn't sufficient to start with, or over time, mineral buildup and sediment fill the underground cracks which your well water seeps through, cutting off the flow of water and decreasing its yield dramatically. When this happens, hydrofracturing is one of the most effective solutions.

How Hydrofracturing Works

Hydrofracturing was initially developed to increase the yield of oil fields. Modern well contractors use it to blast out sediment and mineral encrustation in your well and to open up new seams in the stone. To do this, a long hose is lowered into the well, with inflatable or mechanical packers around it to seal the well closed. Then water under high pressure is blasted through the hose. As it forces its way through the stone walls, it opens new channels so the future flow of water is significantly increased. This process can be used along the length of an entire well, or targeted to one area by sealing it off with packers.

Benefits of Hydrofracturing

HydrofracturingThis process is a fast, simple solution to a well which has gone dry due to mineral buildup. As a result, your dishwasher may not wash adequately or you may have low water pressure. Because this process uses clean water to blast open the cracks in the rock, it’s safe and will not contaminate the water supply. It is more controlled than older methods which used dynamite or dry ice to achieve the same effect, which had the potential to damage the well and contaminate the water.
