1. Check the Battery

Cold weather makes it harder for car batteries to hold a charge, potentially leaving you stranded in your driveway or a parking lot. Check that your battery is fully charged and clean off any corrosion around the terminals.

2. Inspect Tires

Driving over road ice and salt for months on end is tough on your tires, and dramatic temperature changes can affect the pressure inside. Carefully inspect the tread for damage, and check to make sure they’re properly inflated. If the treads are worn unevenly or look shallow, take your car to an auto repair shop as soon as possible.

3. Change the Oil

While some cars can go 10,000 miles without an oil change, most need fresh lubricant every three months. The start of a new season is a good reminder to change your oil, preventing unnecessary damage and helping you get the most out of your vehicle.

4. Top Off Fluids

Once winter is over, check your coolant, brake, and windshield washer fluid levels. Any leaking hoses or clamps that look worn should also be replaced immediately.

5. Clean the Undercarriage

Over the winter, road salt builds up in the wheel wells and across the undercarriage, where it eats away at the paint and invites rust. As soon as the snow has melted, take your vehicle to a car wash and spray out any remaining salt and other debris with a high-pressure hose.
