When spring weather makes your yard lush and verdant, it’s time to get your lawn mower out of the garage or shed. Before the first use, it’s important that you prepare your yard care equipment to ensure efficiency and ease of operation. Here are a few tips for preparing your lawn mower for the spring season.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for the Spring

1. Clean It

Your lawn mower might have collected some dust throughout the winter season. Rinse it off with your garden hose, and wipe off any lingering dirt and leafy debris with a washcloth. Finish with a fresh coat of wax to keep it as clean as possible during springtime use.

2. Sharpen the Blades

3. Change the Oil

Protect your lawn mower’s engine by changing the oil before you start using it more heavily during the spring. Unscrew the cap at the bottom of the engine, and allow the old oil to completely flow into a pan or bucket. Once drained, replace the cap, and pour new oil into the reservoir at the top.

Schedule a Tuneup

Allow heavy equipment specialists to perform a tuneup on your lawn mower once the weather gets warm. They’ll typically remove and replace the spark plug and clean or replace the air filter. Additionally, they’ll inspect your equipment and perform repairs as necessary.
