Actuators play an integral role in keeping machines moving. Regardless of the industry you’re in, they’re one of the most essential components you use. When an actuator breaks, on the other hand, it can render your industrial tools and equipment unusable. Below are several of the most common causes behind actuator breakdowns, as well as a few ways that you can diagnose the issue.

Common Reasons for an Actuator Breakdown

1. Worn Valve Stem

The valve stem is responsible for funneling gas into a chamber and then keeping it contained. When yours becomes worn, it won’t properly hold the gas and will interfere with the gas-over-hydraulic actuator’s function in your tools. Many people waste time and money trying to repair the actuator, when in reality it’s the valve stem that needs to be replaced. Always check the valve stem for wear, tears, or damage following an actuator breakdown, as this is a leading cause.

2. Too Much Torque

This may be due to improper settings, or the issue may lie with the motor itself. Actuator torque needs to align with fastener size so that fixtures on the tool aren’t overpowered. Check the manual for your tool to determine the recommended torque for the actuator. Once you’ve dialed in the right settings, you can be confident nothing will go wrong with your actuator and that you’re getting the best service from your tools.

3. Obstructions

Obstructions in the actuator or its motor can lead to frustrating results, but they’re a common issue that’s easy to fix. Check for any debris, dirt, or grime that has built up from using the tool. This issue is especially common in industrial manufacturing or chemical settings because of the materials and substances used for those kinds of work. Turn the tool off and clean around the actuator. Once the debris is gone, you shouldn’t have any issues. You can prevent future obstruction problems by regularly cleaning your industrial tools and parts, but if you’re having problems keeping your actuator in good working condition, have a professional take a look at it.
