If you’ve been in an auto accident and an insurance company is offering you a prompt payout, it may be tempting to settle quickly. Beware, however, that some types of car injuries take time to present symptoms. Even if you feel fine, you should always hold off and get a full medical check to rule out the following issues before accepting an injury settlement.

3 Types of Car Injuries Without Immediate Symptoms

1. Soft Tissue Injuries

You’re likely to notice a broken bone right away. However, harm to the soft tissues — ligaments, muscles, and tendons — is less immediately obvious. These injuries result in swelling, pain, and limited mobility, but the symptoms can take days or weeks to present. Also complicating matters is the fact that soft tissue damage doesn’t show up on X-rays.

2. Whiplash

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury that occurs in the neck. It happens when a sudden force, such as the impact of a vehicle from behind, causes the head to jerk forward and then snap back into place. Signs include pain and stiffness, decreased range of motion in the neck, tenderness in the shoulders and upper back, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.

3. Concussion

If you receive a strong blow to the head, however, your brain may strike the inside of the skull, resulting in a concussion. Symptoms include a cloudy mind, trouble concentrating, headache, blurry vision, nausea, dizziness, and abnormal sleep patterns.
