If your preschool-aged child has ever thrown a tantrum in the middle of a public place or refused to go to bed, you’re not alone. Most little kids will test boundaries and exhibit challenging behavior from time to time. While this can be frustrating to deal with as a parent, there are steps you can take to appropriately discipline your child and promote good behavior.

4 Ways to Discipline Your Preschool-Aged Child

1. Ignore the Behavior

Sometimes, preschool aged children act out just to get a reaction. If you start to ignore the bad behavior and act like it doesn’t bother you, your child may get bored and stop the outbursts. Just stand there and wait for your child to finish acting out.

2. Set Rules

preschoolIt’s important for your child to have consistent rules to follow and understand that there’s consequences for breaking them. Explain these rules in language your child can understand. For example, you could tell your little one that they need to go to bed at 8 p.m. every night so that they can get the proper rest.

3. Give Consequences

If your child breaks a rule, you should follow through with the appropriate consequences. For instance, if your child doesn’t clean up their toys, you should look at ways of incorporating games and songs to make picking up the toys an activity. Turn it into a teachable moment. This will be very productive and associate cleaning with fun.

4. Praise Good Behavior

When your child behaves appropriately, you should always let them know you’re proud of them. For example, if your little one brushes their teeth without being reminded, tell them that you’re proud of them for taking good care of their teeth.
