It’s estimated that one-third of the American population avoids going to the dentist because of dental-related anxiety. This high number is concerning because untreated dental issues not only cause oral health problems, but they can also have serious effects on other parts of the body. If you’re anxious about going to the dentist, below are some tips to ease your fears.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

For most people, dental anxiety is rooted in an aversion to pain. This fear could originate from past experiences that were painful or even stories from friends and relatives. Fortunately, with the advent of new technologies, treatment methods, and medications, most modern dental procedures are much more comfortable. For those procedures that are more in-depth, dentists understand their patients' concerns and will find solutions that provide the most comfort and assurance, such as building trust and communicating before, during, and after procedures.

dentistFear of the unknown can also be all or part of one's dental anxiety. Because you cannot see what's happening in your own mouth, there’s a mysterious component to the happenings in a dentist's office. Again, dentists understand this concern, and they’ll often discuss each step of the procedure beforehand, and even give you updates as they go.

Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety

You can overcome dental anxiety, but it takes a bit of proactive work and advocating for yourself. Most importantly, share your fears and hesitations with your dentist and their staff beforehand. This will allow them to adjust and tailor treatments as necessary to fit your comfort level. Some other tips include:

  • Listen to music. Bring earbuds with you and listen to music throughout the procedure; calming music will both relax you and drown out the more distressing sounds, like drills and suctions, that come with a dental visit.
  • Use hand signals. Before the procedure begins, let the staff know that you will raise your hand if things get too intense; this keeps the lines of communication open when your mouth may be filled with tools, gauze, or other dental treatment items.
  • Avoid caffeine. Don't drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages prior to the appointment. Caffeine excites the nervous system and can exacerbate anxiety issues.
