Every season has its hazards for driver safety, and that includes spring. Melting snow, rain, and the lingering effects of winter's harsh weather change road conditions and can make driving more difficult for new drivers. Here are a few dangers associated with spring and how you can avoid them.

5 Risks to Driver Safety in Spring

1. Rain

Wet roads are slick, and many drivers who aren't used to these conditions slip off the road or into other cars due to unexpected difficulties in steering and braking. Drive slowly in wet weather, and avoid driving in flooded areas. If you can’t tell how deep a puddle is, turn around and choose another route.

2. Other Traffic

As the weather gets warmer, drivers have to share the road with pedestrians, bikers, and animals, which are more active during this season. Pay attention, and leave extra space for passing them.

3. Potholes

Driver SafetyThe cycle of freezing and thawing that continues throughout the winter can cause serious road damage. In the spring, keep your eyes out for new potholes, which may have formed due to this erosion. Drive around them if possible to avoid tire damage.

4. Hail

While it is uncommon, hailstorms are a possibility during the spring. Large hailstones can dent cars and crack windows, and if this happens while driving, it may lead to an accident. If possible, wait for the weather to pass before driving, and store your car in a covered area.

5. Car Wear & Tear

Winter is hard on your car. Slushy, salty, and muddy roads can cause buildup in your air filter and on your brake pads, while temperature changes affect tire pressure. Pay particular attention to your car during this time, as it may develop problems with the engine or brakes due to winter wear. Clean and inspect it after the last snow thaws, and continue to watch for any unusual noises or handling issues for a few weeks.
