If you neglect the air filters in your HVAC system, a major malfunction is essentially inevitable. It might take a few months, but at some point, the system will be so overworked that it will simply break down. Fortunately, changing the air filters is a simple job that does not require any technical expertise or special equipment. However, there are a couple of points your HVAC contractor will want you to keep in mind before getting started.

What Should You Look For in an Air Filter?

Regardless of the brand, all air filters have a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating. This lets consumers know what kind of particles the filter in question can trap. The lower the MERV rating, the larger the particles that can pass through the filter. Most residential filters are rated between 8 and 13. If someone in your home has asthma or allergies, though, your HVAC contractor may recommend using MERV-rated filters as high as 16 to keep most contaminants out.

When Should You Replace Your Home’s Filters?

HVAC contractorHVAC contractors urge homeowners to change their air filters every 60 to 90 days. If you have pets, children, or housemates who smoke, it might be necessary to change the filters every month. While you can purchase washable filters that are reusable, the disposable ones tend to be more efficient at eliminating contaminants from the air. Fortunately, they're fairly affordable.

Once you put in a new filter, check it after 30 days and then every two weeks to determine when it should be replaced. Filters should be changed when they have turned completely gray and accumulated visible dust, dirt, and debris.

It’s important to note that filters with a lower MERV rating will need to be replaced more often than those with a higher rating. Additionally, you may need to change them more frequently in the spring and summer because of the pollen that’s tracked in from outside.
