Security systems effectively monitor your property to keep you and your family safe — but not if spiderwebs or bugs are constantly blocking the cameras or setting off the motion sensors. You may experience this problem because insects are drawn to the small lights on the cameras. Spiders in turn then build their webs across the lens to feast on the pests. Below are five strategies for keeping creepy crawlies at bay.

How to Protect Your Security System Cameras From Bugs

1. Turn Off the Lights

Since the light on your camera is what’s drawing the bugs in the first place, the simplest solution is to turn that light off. This isn’t possible on all older models, and turning off the light will usually inhibit your camera’s effectiveness at night, so while easy, it may not be the best method.

2. Lubricate the Casing

Spiders can’t build their webs on your camera if the surface of the casing is too slick for them, so apply a water-resistant lubricant spray. Just make sure that the camera’s cover is made of a material that will prevent the substance from penetrating internal components or reaching the lens.

3. Repel or Trap

security systemsRepellent should help keep insects away from your security cameras. Apply every week or so to maintain this protection, or more often if it rains. Avoid placing these substances on the lens, as this can lead to fogging, and practice electrical safety by powering off the unit before application and keeping all fluids away from cords or power sources. A similar tactic would be to install insect attractants, such as a trap lamp, nearby. Just ensure the glow from this device doesn’t interfere with your camera’s image quality.

4. Attach a Dryer Sheet

Dryer sheets have strong smells that insects and arachnids can’t stand. One effective strategy is to use a rubber band to affix a dryer sheet to the body of your camera. Replace it every three weeks or so.

5. Use Intrusion Detection

If all else fails, switch from a simple motion detection system to intrusion detection. You can do this by updating the parameters of your security system so it only sends you an alert if it detects larger objects within its frame for a set amount of time, such as a few seconds. This will cut down on false alarms without sacrificing safety.
