The Charlotte Motor Speedway is known nationwide as “America’s Home for Racing.” NASCAR® fans know it as the site to some of the most prestigious races, such as the Coca-Cola® 600 and the NASCAR All-Star Race. The track has been around for over 50 years and is an important part of Charlotte’s auto show and racing history.

How Did It Begin?

The track was established in 1959, designed and built by the chairman and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Bruton Smith. He did so with his partner Curtis Turner, another Hall of Fame inductee and one of the first drivers on the circuit. The track measures 1 and a half miles and hosted the first World 600 NASCAR race on June 19, 1960. While they were forced to file for bankruptcy due to low ticket sales, the committee of stockholders was assembled in 1962 to operate the speedway, and Smith eventually became a majority stockholder in the track in 1975.

car showSmith worked on many projects that helped transformed the track. In 1984, 40 condominiums were built above turn one, turning the speedway into the only American sports facility providing year-round living accommodations. A lighting system was also installed in 1992, allowing them to host nighttime racing and events; the system used mirrors to provide light without glares, shadows, or large poles.

How Is the Speedway Currently Used?

Today, the speedway is a famous part of the NASCAR circuit. It has been featured in motion pictures such as “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Speedway,” and “Days of Thunder.” It hosts many events year-round, including auto shows and swap meets. The Charlotte Motor Speedway can accommodate more than 89,000 racing spectators and over 10,000 car collectors, sellers, and buyers, ensuring everyone has a great time.
