Inviting others to join you in worship at church is a fantastic way to spread the Gospel and help them enrich their lives. It can be a sensitive topic for some, however. There are important do’s and don’ts to stick to so they feel comfortable and will know what they’re walking into. This will create a better overall experience for everyone.

Do:

Explain What to Expect.

Every church and religious system is different. Let your friend or loved one know what to expect at the worship service, youth group, or Bible study that you’re inviting them to. Walk them through a typical session; explain if there’s singing, who will be speaking and about what, how long services last, and etiquette.

Explain the Community.

church-knox-presbyterian-churchMany people join a church simply for the sense of community and group opportunities. These aren’t always expressed in a single service, so let your friend know what else the church does. Tell them about fun charity events or study groups you enjoy, sponsored intramural sports leagues, and opportunities they’ll have to get involved. This will better explain what it’s like to be a member of the church.

Don’t:

Pressure Them.

Everyone has different beliefs, and your friend or family member’s may not totally align with the church. Never pressure or guilt them into coming; it needs to be their own decision. You’re simply providing the foundation to let them know what an exciting and rewarding experience being a member is.

Take “No” Personally.

Church plays an important part in people’s lives, but it’s not for everyone. If your friend declines, don’t take it personally. They may have any number of reasons based on personal beliefs or interests. They may be more open later, and at the least, you can still maintain your friendship outside of the church.
