If you’re looking to spruce up your indoor living space, consider adding greenery. Plants bring life to your home, add vibrant elements to suit each room, and may even improve your air quality. Here are some tips for using plants in interior decorating.

4 Plants to Add to Your Indoor Living Space

1. Bird-of-Paradise

Bird-of-paradise is a gorgeous tropical plant that provides bright colors and a dramatic silhouette to your space. The spiky, vivid orange and blue petals of this flower are said to resemble a bird. Tall potted varieties add verve to spacious or high-ceilinged areas of your home, like living rooms. Its sunniness especially complements bamboo blinds, whitewashed plank shelving, geometric end tables, and blue or green walls for a complete beach vibe.

2. Boston Fern

The Boston fern originated in humid forests and swamps and is one of the most popular plants used in interior decorating today. The dense and leafy cascading plant is easy to take care of and tends to look best in living rooms and balconies. Consider hanging the plant in a basket suspended on macrame ropes or placing it on a pedestal in your living space.

3. Succulents

Typically found in desert climates, these come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, from stately saguaros to striped zebra plants and the captivating fractals of sempervivum. These hardy plants require little attention, but you’ll need to wear thick gloves to avoid their prickles. Try miniature versions to add pep to a bathroom ledge, or a towering variety to make a statement in your living room.

4. Elephant Ear Plant

This tropical plant has large heart-shaped leaves and can grow as high as 5 feet tall. While usually grown outdoors, this herbaceous perennial can also make an attractive indoor plant. Given its size, this lovely plant is best placed in areas that receive ample indirect sunlight. Cluster it with other plants of various sizes to spruce up an underutilized, window-adjacent corner in a lofted bedroom or dining room.
