After you’ve taken your car in for auto painting, it’s only natural to want to return to normal driving habits as quickly as possible. However, to properly preserve that new paint job, there are a few guidelines you must follow. These do’s and don’ts will ensure your new coat of paint will stand the test of time.

Do:

Hand wash instead of going to the carwash.

Car washes and waxing can damage your auto painting job while it’s still hardening. Car washes can scratch the paint, while wax can inhibit the curing process. Generally speaking, it’s better to hand wash your vehicle for the first three months after repainting it. Use a mild car wash solution with cool water and a soft sponge to prevent scratches and other damage.

Park in the garage.

Don’t:

Park under a tree.

Don’t be tempted to park under a tree to keep your freshly painted car in the shade. Bird poop and tree sap are highly acidic, and could quickly compromise your new paint job. If you’re forced to park beneath a tree, this is another case where using a car cover is a smart idea.

Dry wipe your car.

While you may want to remove dust from the car, you should never try to wipe it off with a dry cloth or brush. Dry wiping will easily scratch new paint, putting your touch-ups to waste. Unless it's a substance that will eat through your paint, wait to clean your car in its entirety with a mild soap and water.
