Braces are an irreplaceable solution for straightening teeth, which means they need to be protected. Unfortunately, certain foods can pose risks to the devices. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy something similar, however. If you find yourself craving something you shouldn’t have, try one of the foods below instead.

3 Alternative Snack Options for People With Braces

1. Hull-Less Popcorn

The hulls and un-popped seeds in popcorn can easily damage the wiring and anchors of the braces. If you’re kicking back to watch a movie, pop some hull-less popcorn instead. This option is much softer and safer than regular kernels. You’ll still need to brush and floss carefully after eating hull-less popcorn to ensure no food is stuck in your teeth or braces.

2. Nut Butter

Various nut butters are available that you can use instead. They’re loaded with vitamins and minerals and are a great source of protein as well. Make sure to purchase natural options so you won’t be introducing harmful sugar into your mouth, and eat in moderation, as nut products tend to be caloric.

3. Breath Mints

One of the biggest “foods” people with braces miss is gum. To freshen your mouth, reach for a breath mint instead. Look for sugar-free options to protect your teeth. If you used gum to naturally wash your teeth throughout the day before, opt for a brush and floss instead. An orthodontist can direct you to many convenient products designed for braces.
