Few things contribute to a gorgeous landscape quite like mature trees, especially if they develop blooms in the spring. However, if you want your trees to stay healthy and attractive, proper tree care is crucial. Here are three tips to help you prepare your towering perennials for the warmer weather.

Tree Care Tips to Prepare Your Landscape for Spring

1. Test Your Soil

Wintertime can leach crucial nutrients from the soil, which is why testing your soil in the early spring is important for tree health. Pick up a soil test kit from your local home improvement store and sample the soil around your tree to see what elements the dirt needs. Recommended pH depends greatly on what kinds of trees you have planted in your yard, so look up the species of tree to determine which types of fertilizers and additives to incorporate into the soil. For instance, fruit trees thrive when the soil has a pH somewhere between 6.0 and 6.5, but weeping willows do best in slightly more acidic conditions, with a pH of 5.0 to 6.0. Fertilizers that are high in nitrogen can increase the acidity of your soil.

2. Inspect Trees for Problems

Spring brings more daylight, so take advantage of that extra brightness by carefully evaluating your trees for damage. Look for weather-related injuries that may have occurred during the winter, such as broken branches, damaged bark, or issues with boring pests. If you see problems, document them by taking notes about what you see and taking pictures to show to arborists, who can diagnose any issues.

3. Prune Trees

Hire a tree care professional to evaluate and prune your trees, and be prepared for the fact that severely damaged ones may need to be removed to prevent diseases or infestations from spreading.
