Any gardener feels immense pride when they see their rose bush bloom for the first time. If you’d like to flex your green thumb with new buds that are challenging but yielding stunning results, understand the needs of roses to give yourself the best chance at success. Here are some tips to growing a healthy rose garden in your home.

How to Grow Your Own Roses

1. Plant in the Spring

gardenPlant your flowers after the last frost of the season to ensure they’re warm enough to grow. Experts recommend bare-root roses and container roses for novice growers, since they easily establish in a garden. Bare-roots are only available in the early spring, and plant them immediately once you get them to prevent dying out. Container roses are more resistant, and can wait in your garage until you’re ready to plant.

2. Choose a Spot Carefully

Rose bushes require 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day, but can be scorched if the sun gets too hot, so plant them somewhere they’ll be shielded from the worst of the heat between 2 and 4 PM. This could be next to a fence, by a large tree, or off the side of your home. Roots can start to rot if water accumulates around them, so plant your roses in an area with heavy clay soil or on a slope.

3. Water Thoroughly

New blooms require around 2 inches of water a week. Instead of watering a little every day, schedule deep soakings a few times a week. Consider installing a drip sprinkler system on an automatic timer to deliver water straight to the roots and take the work off your hands.
