When spring arrives, you want to spend more time outside, enjoying the warmer temperatures. As part of your home and garden preparation, consider the following yard maintenance tips. They will keep your property looking beautiful all season long.

How to Prepare Your Yard for Spring

1. Clean

First, clean up the debris that has accumulated near your home and garden during winter. Branches, twigs, leaves, and litter have had ample time to build up during the colder months. In some cases, a rake, a garbage bag, and some elbow grease may be all that's necessary to spruce up a yard. For more heavy-duty cleanup, use a leaf blower to sweep everything into one central spot, then scoop the pile into a garbage bag.

2. Trim

Dead or dying branches are a potential safety hazard and should be removed sooner rather than later. A professional trimming will ensure healthy tree growth moving forward—and save you the headache and potential risk of accessing hard-to-reach branches on your own.

3. Fertilize

For rich, green grass, try using a little fertilizer. Start by applying a lawn fertilizer, followed by a preemergent herbicide to prevent crabgrass. Six to eight weeks later, re-apply both of these products, as well as a broadleaf weed killer; many home and garden stores sell preemergent and weed killer combination formulas. If you want to go the all-natural route, first mow your lawn, then spread compost or mulch across it to encourage new growth.
