Whether they’re in your living room or guest suite, ceiling fans play integral roles in your home’s comfort and energy savings. It’s not always easy to determine what model is best, and you’ll need an electrician to help with new installation. To truly reap the benefits, use the primer below.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Ceiling Fans

Where to Put Them

Fans are especially useful in living, dining, and sleeping areas. On the days when it’s not too hot, your ceiling fan is all you need to promote ventilation and keep your home’s interior environment comfortable. Over time, these devices may even pay for themselves in reduced energy costs. Ceiling fans are typically most functional when placed directly in the center of the room. Keep the blades at least a foot and a half away from the walls. Consider installing multiple units in a room if you have a large open floor plan or an irregular layout.

What Models to Choose

There are several factors to consider when picking a fan. If you’re planning to mount it in a low-ceiling room, purchase a flush model. If you have tall ceilings, pick a style that comes with a hanging rod instead. Keep in mind blade dimensions, as the size will impact both aesthetics and effectiveness. The larger the room, the wider the blade needs to be to work properly. For example, blade lengths of 36 inches or less are fine for rooms that are 75 square feet or smaller, but you’ll need 50 to 54 inches for rooms that are between 225 and 400 square feet. Consider lighting as well. Varying speed fans give you more control, and you can couple them with a remote for easy use. Lastly, for the maximum benefit on your utility bills, look for models that are Energy Star®-rated.

Why Rely on an Electrician for Installation

electricianBecause ceiling fans generate such force, they need to be installed securely. They also need to be properly connected to the wiring to guard against electric shock. You must ensure your model is compatible with the electrical box and overall system; if not, you may need to make alterations. If you’re going to use a wall switch to control the fan, you’ll need to ensure you have the right type. In addition, getting up on a ladder to mount the fan can pose safety risks. A bonded, licensed, and insured electrician will provide secure installation and save you the trouble and hazards.
