If you're heading out on your own for the first time, it can be difficult to know what to pack. First-time movers often run into problems when they forget an important item or aren't sure what they need to buy for a new home. To help you avoid this problem, look over the following list.

Basic Packing List for First-Time Movers

1. First Day Basics

There are a few items you're going to need to have handy the very moment you walk into your new home. Pack a separate box with a phone charger, toilet paper, hand soap or sanitizer, a change of clothes, a set of bedding, and hygiene supplies including a hairbrush, toothbrush, and toothpaste. This way, you won't have to unpack a dozen storage boxes to take care of your basic needs.

2. Furniture

If your new house or apartment is furnished, you can likely skip this step. If not, make sure you have a bed, seating, and a table at minimum. You should also have a fan or a heater depending on the weather. Other furniture can be added later.

3. Kitchen Supplies

MoversYou might be surprised to find just how many items you need for cooking. Make sure you have a skillet, a saucepan, spoons, spatulas, mixing bowls, baking dishes, knives, a cutting board, oven mitts, a toaster, dish soap, salt and pepper, and tinfoil or plastic wrap along with the dishes you want to eat off of.

4. Bathroom Supplies

In addition to everything you need for personal hygiene like soap, shampoo, and toothpaste, pack a box with a shower curtain, bath mat, towels, and a trash can. You should also have cleaning supplies, including a toilet scrubber.

5. Emergency Items

While hopefully nothing goes wrong during your move, you should have these items handy just in case. Pack a first aid kit, a toolbox, a flashlight with batteries or candles and matches, light bulbs, a plunger, and duct tape.
