Skylights bring in cheerful natural light to brighten up your home and improve your property’s value. You likely don’t think about these windows until something goes wrong with them, so it’s important that you know the common signs of a problem. This will allow you to have them repaired or replaced before you find yourself dealing with a bad leak.

When Should You Have Your Skylights Repaired or Replaced?

1. Discoloration

When the sealing around a window fails, it allows moisture to build up between the glass panes. The minerals in that moisture build up over time on the inside of the window, fogging it up and discoloring the glass. You may also see discoloration on the drywall inside the skylight if the window is leaking and causing water damage. If this is the case, it will likely be a yellow or dark stain or bubbling paint.

2. Cracks

skylightsCracks on the window of any size mean you need to replace the glass immediately. Even if it looks small, it can still let water through and cause damage in the drywall and drip to the floor below. Any cracks will only grow with time due to the temperature extremes on the glass, especially during the winter.

3. Damaged Roofing

When you have any work done on the roofing system around the skylights, such as a replacement or repairs, the windows should be replaced as well. The window will get disturbed as the surrounding area is worked on, and any damage to the nearby flashing or shingles leaves the area susceptible to leaks. It’s best to replace the entire area to stay leak-free.
