As the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow again, you’ll want to gear up for the mowing ahead. By taking the right steps to prepare, you can ensure your lawn mower will provide a level cut all season. Additionally, a pre-season inspection will help you catch any problems before they cause a breakdown. Follow the tips below to cover all the crucial components.

How to Prepare Your Mower for Spring

1. Sharpen the Blades

Dull or chipped mower blades lead to an uneven cut, which increases the risk of disease in your grass and makes the lawn look uneven. From the underside of the mower, you can remove the blades and sharpen them with a file. If they’re excessively chipped or bent, they may need to be replaced instead. While you’re working on the underside, it’s worth cleaning off any old grass that could hinder performance.

2. Change the Oil

As it sits over winter, the oil in your mower may have gotten thick. Additionally, grime from the previous season of mowing can make it move sluggishly. When that happens, the engine may not receive enough lubrication to its vital parts. Once you’ve drained the old oil, replace it with the correct grade for your lawn mower. If you don’t want to deal with oil disposal, a professional change can reduce the hassle.

3. Check the Spark Plugs

If spark plugs are loose, dirty, or too old, they may function poorly, making it hard to start your mower. Clean the top of your mower and inspect the spark plugs as you do. If there’s any rust or they seem loose, have them replaced to ensure smooth running all season.

4. Check or Replace the Air Filter

Remove the air filter and inspect. Look inside the pleats and check for excessive dirt. If the air filter is dirty or oil soaked it should be replaced. Some air filter can be cleaned, but it is best to replace. Also clean the top of your mower and inspect any moving parts for wear. Additionally, if you have a self propelled mower inspect the belts to determine whether they’re brittle or breaking.
