Karaoke provides the opportunity for anyone to feel like a star. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned regular, there are a handful of tips that will help you unleash your inner pop star for the night. Use the following guide the next time you go out to a karaoke party with family and friends.

4 Tips On Being a Karaoke Star

1. Choose Compelling Songs

Try to avoid the obvious at karaoke. This includes overused songs such as “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, and “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. Choose tunes that the audience will be familiar with but have not heard in a while, such as 80’s power ballads or 90’s boy band hits.

2. Know the Words

You’ll feel more confident if you already know most of the words to your karaoke songs. Select numbers you often find yourself singing in the shower or car. You can always fall back on the teleprompter if you don’t quite remember the lyrics to the bridge or second verse.

3. Play to the Audience

karaokeTake note of who’s in the audience as you prepare your performance. If you’re with a group of old friends, choose songs that you loved in high school or college. If there has been a trend of choosing R&B classics throughout the night, consider sticking with the theme.

4. Have Fun

Perhaps most importantly, allow yourself to let loose and have fun. It’s less important to be a great singer than it is to embody the spirit and energy of the songs. Feel free to get loud, dance around, and even encourage the audience to sing along during your moment in the spotlight.

The next time you’re in the mood to sing karaoke, head to Gilly's Sports Bar in Dunwoody, GA, with family and friends. For over 20 years, Gilly’s has provided wings, steak, craft beer, and happy hour cocktails to Atlanta patrons.
