Whether it’s woodworking, plumbing, or electrical work, all projects use fasteners to some degree. While particular types are unique to the individual craft, threaded fasteners, in general, are commonly used. If you’re unsure what this means, here are some terms you should know.

Threaded Fasteners Fundamentals

Screws

Pointed on one end and designed to pierce through a material, this threaded fastener is used for everything from joining lumber to installing a curtain rod. On the opposite side from the tip, there’s a head with a particular indentation. These are for the different types of screwdrivers. For example, a single line passing through the diameter requires a flathead screwdriver, whereas an indentation shaped like a cross requires a Phillips head screwdriver.

Bolts

fastenersLike a screw, bolts have threads that run down the body, but unlike screws, they require a nut to stay in place. They also have a smooth head that’s free of any indentation; a wrench is needed to tighten it once it’s paired with a nut. This two-part system means that bolts have more holding power and strength than screws. If you’re joining two pieces and need it to be secure, opt for bolts instead of screws.

Nuts

Small and circular, nuts are essential for attaching bolts. They come in a variety of styles, each with its own set of benefits. One of the most common types is the hex nut, which has six sides; this shape allows people to grip the nut with a wrench easily. Other common kinds of nuts include the wing, which has two protruding pieces so that you can tighten them by hand and the acorn, which has a domed cap on one side to protect the bolt and create a more polished look.

Washers

Finally, washers are used in conjunction with nuts and bolts to either help disperse the load or protect the piece from over-tightening. These little disks have flat surfaces on the top and bottom and a hole in the middle. Just like the previous pieces, there are a variety of washers; there are flat versions, which have a smooth outside edge, and toothed options, which have spikes radiating either outward from the edge or toward the center. These little spikes offer additional grip to the surfaces.
