Many construction companies spend all winter waiting for temperatures to rise, so they can break ground on new projects. Unfortunately, spring weather also often brings rain, which can make excavation sites and other projects extremely dangerous. Below are a few tips for keeping workers safe and preventing delays when you start building.

4 Construction Safety Tips for Spring

1. Take Steps to Prevent Falls

Falling from ladders or scaffolding is one of the most dangerous hazards workers face, accounting for nearly 40% of construction site fatalities every year. Be sure your crew has adequate safety equipment, provide non-slip surfaces in rainy weather, and consider calling off work for the day if the weather makes moving around the job site too dangerous.

2. Be Cautious at Excavation Sites

When designing the excavation site, take steps to ensure your workers can get out quickly if necessary, and keep all earth-moving equipment as far back from the edge as possible.

3. Check Your Wiring

Electrocution is another common construction site injury, and wet conditions only increase the risk. Before working with power tools or extension cords in inclement weather, check that they’re rated for outdoor use and are water-resistant.

4. Look Out for Thunderstorms

Cranes, scaffolds, and steel framing members attract lightning, which can be extremely dangerous to anyone standing near or on the structure. Train your workers to steer clear of these areas during thunderstorms, and wait until the threat has passed before resuming work.
