Flushing objects down your toilet can wreak havoc on the plumbing. Certain materials aren’t made to dissolve easily in water and could cause clogs to develop in the pipes. To avoid emergency repairs, here are a few items you should never throw down the drain.

What Items Shouldn’t You Flush Down the Toilet?

1. Q-Tips

While they may seem small and harmless, it’s the shape of these products that make them a challenge to flush. They could get stuck sideways in the pipes and catch other substances that get sent down. Plus, the cotton that they’re made of doesn’t disintegrate in water and will increase the chances of a clog forming.

2. Flushable Wipes

Even though the packaging says they’re safe to flush, you should never put used wipes in the toilet. Any material that doesn’t have the same makeup as toilet paper won’t break down properly and could cause a blockage to develop in the plumbing system.

3. Floss

plumbingYou might think that a string of floss could easily slide right through the intricate maze of pipes. However, since this material gets tangled, it can get stuck halfway and create a net-like formation that prevents other materials from passing by, creating a clog.

4. Kitty Litter

For many families, clearing out the kitty litter means dumping the waste into the toilet and flushing it away. However, this material is made to form thick, solid clumps the moment that it comes in contact with moisture. Combine that with the tight confines of the plumbing system, and you’ve got the perfect conditions for developing a stubborn clog.

5. Paper Towels

The fact that they’re made from paper doesn’t mean they are safe to flush down the toilet. These products are actually thicker than toilet paper and take much longer to disintegrate in water. This could cause them to get caught in the pipes and produce a thick blockage that is difficult to get rid of.
