Are Computers Going Away?, Chicago, Illinois

It seems like we can do almost everything on our phones these days.  Some apps are only available for phones and tablets and can’t be used on computers at all.  In fact the latest Apple® iPad Pro® has been bench tested to be as fast as or even faster than some of Apple’s® own MacBook Pro® computers!  Are we moving away from computers as our main source of work machine to replace them with handheld devices?

Computers Have Big Advantages Over Devices

No matter how good Apple® iOS® or Android® mobile operating systems get they don’t have the same interface as computers.  It’s difficult to run multiple applications and easily switch between them, they don’t sit well on a table without a purpose built stand, and no matter how good aftermarket keyboard cases get they still can’t match a good laptop or desktop keyboard.  There are standard bluetooth keyboards that can work with iOS® and Android® devices but they’re bulky to carry around.  Computers also come with full versions of applications that have features that the mobile devices don’t.  For example Microsoft® Powerpoint® presentations can’t be designed on a mobile like a computer.  Display sizes mean it’s difficult to see the details in photos and other documents without zooming in on a mobile device.  As good as mobile screens have become they are usually much smaller than a computer monitor.

Mobile Devices Don’t Last Long

You may be one of those people who hold on to a mobile device as long as possible before replacing it, but there are many people who can’t work with a two year old iPhone®.  Apple® computers especially are designed to last about a decade, in fact they are some of the longest lasting computers out there and the large investment pays off in the long run.  Think of all the abuse your iPhone® gets compared to your computer.  Phones get dropped, are left in the sun, are constantly jingling around in pockets, go for a run with you, and are subject to incredibly harsh use in just every day life.  Computers last because we take better care of them than we do our phones or even tablets.

Mobile Device Technology is Quickly Advancing

At Experimac Valdosta we have eight to  ten year old computers that still work great, but nobody is carrying around a ten year old iPhone® and expecting it to work.  Even the iPad® has changed a lot in ten years, it is significantly faster, thinner, and lighter, and the older models sometimes can’t keep up with modern uses.  Computers on the other hand haven’t gained as much in  the last decade, they are essentially updated version, not revolutionary versions like the iPhone® so they can still handle the everyday tasks we ask of them.

In our opinion the computer will be around for a long time, despite the rise in mobile usage, but twenty years from now there may be an entirely new way to do the work we do on our computers now.  With folding phablets like the Samsung® Galaxy Fold® and Huawei® Mate X® the line between phone, tablet, and computer may start to blur.  We’ll have to wait and see, but for now if you need advice on what phone, tablet, or computer you need reach out to the experts at Experimac Valdosta and they can help suggest what’s best for you and your needs.  Sometimes it may be a combination of all three.
