Using dry shampoo and going days or weeks without fully washing hair has become a popular trend, but it might not be the right choice for your hair type. Hair needs to be washed to remove sweat, pollutants, and styling products, but washing it too much or with the wrong product can cause damage. Factors such as hair color, length, and density all play roles. Talk to your stylist and use this guide to help determine the best schedule for your hair.

A Guide to Washing & Conditioning Hair

Daily

Dermatologists and stylists agree that most people don’t need to shampoo and condition their hair daily. This is because shampoo eliminates the natural oils that moisturize and hydrate your hair. For some people, washing too frequently may cause locks to appear dry and brittle, and make them prone to breakage. Only people who have excessively oily hair and those who exercise all seven days a week should wash and condition each day. Cleaning your hair daily can also minimize the appearance of white flakes for those with dandruff.

Two to Four Times a Week

hair colorThose with fine or color-treated hair will benefit from washing their tresses every other day. Reduced frequency keeps healthy oils intact, which promotes nourishment within your hair follicles. It also lessens the risk of breakage and protects your hair color from fading. Thick, coarse, and relaxed hair types should go without washing for at least three days for the best results. By this point, unnecessary oils have built up and should be removed, but natural sebum has had ample opportunity to penetrate your hair to keep it well-hydrated and strong.

Once a Month

That’s right – some people with varying hair types find that they’re able to cut back to the point that they only have to fully wash once a month or even less frequently. Some even quit the shampoo game altogether, relying only on vinegar, baking soda, or other alternative solutions for periodic cleansing. The theory is that your hair gradually grows accustomed to the lack of shampoo, regulating its own oil levels to produce healthy, natural locks. While there’s anecdotal evidence to suggest this can work for some, proceed with caution, as others have reported unmanageable and greasy hair, scalp irritation, and dandruff.
