Regular teeth cleaning is one of the most important steps to maintain excellent oral health. When you get dentures, your oral hygiene routine will change slightly, but teeth cleaning is still essential. Below are a few ways to approach this task.

A Simple Guide to Cleaning Dentures

1. Rinse After Eating

When you eat, food debris and particles may become trapped between your teeth. If unaddressed, it can contribute to bacterial growth, foul breath, and other issues. After each meal, remove your dentures and rinse them. Handle them carefully to avoid dropping them or bending the plastic or clasps. Clean your mouth as well as the prosthesis with a soft-bristled toothbrush or washcloth on the gums. Avoid using hot water to clean your dentures, as it may warp the plastic.

2. Brush Daily

teeth cleaningYou should brush any natural teeth and clean your gums twice a day, but you only need to brush your dentures once a day with a soft-bristled brush and specialized cleaner. Don’t use harsh chemicals or whitening toothpaste, as these can damage the device. While the dentures are out of your mouth, use clean gauze or a soft cloth to wipe your tongue, gums, cheeks, and palate to remove bacteria. Remove any adhesive from the grooves in the acrylic portion of the prosthesis as well.

3. Soak Overnight

Most dentures lose their shape if they dry out. This can cause them to become ill-fitting and uncomfortable. To prevent this from happening, soak them overnight in a cup of water or cleansing solution. If the device has metal attachments, use a chlorine-free solution, as chlorine can corrode metal.

In addition to these daily care tips, it’s important to see your dentist twice a year. They’ll examine your mouth and gums, and will make sure your dentures are fitting well and are in good condition.
