When it comes to packing your belongings in a storage unit, some items will require a little more care than others. Objects made of glass, porcelain, ceramic, and even paper require extra precautions to keep them safe. While your belongings won’t be moving around in storage, they will be subjected to a lot of movement on the way there. Vibrations during transportation create opportunities for items to shift and break. Here is what you need to know before you start packing to ensure your items remain safe.

How to Prepare Fragile Items for the Storage Unit

1. Use Bubble Wrap

Secure the bubble wrap with tape to keep it from slipping off and place each item into a small box lined with packing paper or bubble wrap for added padding. Create layers between the items for extra cushion with packing peanuts.

2. Protect Your Paper Items and Photographs

Paper items such as books, documents, and photographs are sensitive to humidity or heat. Prints can bond together in high temperatures, so place them individually in plastic sleeves and store them in airtight, water-resistant boxes. Drop silica gel packets into the boxes with your pictures and other paper items to keep excess moisture at bay.

3. Organize Your Storage Unit

It’s important to make sure that all boxes containing fragile items are well marked so you’ll know to be careful with them when it’s time to move them again. Avoid storing these boxes on the ground where they could get kicked or stepped on. Store the boxes on secure racks and shelves.
