Almost every driver will experience a flat tire sooner or later — but many surprisingly don’t know how to do a tire change. If your vehicle comes with a spare tire and tire change kit, resolving this problem on your own could help you avoid the need for a tow truck. Here’s what you can do to take care of this task.

3 Essential Steps For Changing a Tire

1. Safety First

Your physical safety should always be a top priority when changing a tire. Whenever possible, pull over to a location that is far from traffic. Parking lots and quiet side streets are ideal. Busy roads and areas near a curve or intersection should be avoided. Turn on your hazard lights and activate the parking brake before getting your spare tire kit. Use wheel wedges to keep your car in place.

2. Remove the Damaged Tire

tireStart by removing the hubcap (if applicable) and loosening the lug nuts. Next, use the jack to lift the damaged tire about six inches into the air. Place the jack under the jack point on the underside of your vehicle body. With the tire raised, you can remove the lug nuts and pull the wheel from the hub.

3. Install the Spare

Finally, take your spare tire and place it on the hub, aligning it with the lug bolts. Replace and hand-tighten the lug nuts, then lower the jack. Once the jack has been lowered, finish tightening the lug nuts with your lug wrench. Make sure the spare is tightly fastened and has adequate air pressure. Get your car to a repair shop as soon as possible for a permanent replacement.
