Once the winter weather subsides, many boat owners are ready to get back out on the water. However, a few quick steps are necessary before they can head out. These maintenance tasks keep the boat running efficiently after a long break and ensure that you and your passengers stay safe. Here are a few post-winter tasks to take care of, including inspecting the boat parts for issues.

3 Steps to Get Your Boat Ready for the Warm Season

1. De-Winterize the Engine

Your boat’s engine needs a variety of fluids to function properly. Before taking your boat out on the water, check the engine oil, fuel lines, power steering fluid, and coolant system to see if anything needs to be topped off or replaced. You should also change the engine filters to prevent debris and other substances from getting into the engine.

2. Inspect the Hull

When you pick up your vessel, carefully inspect the surface of the hull for any blisters, chips, or cracks that may have popped up over the winter or the previous season. If there are any signs of damage, head to a boat repair professional to repair any minor issues so that they don’t turn into more serious ones, such as rust or the stringers separating from the hull.

3. Polish the Metal & Teak

This step is less about safety and longevity and more about aesthetics. Go over all of the steel boat parts with a metal polisher to shine them. Then sand the teak to remove any dirt and grime that may have built up over the winter. These steps will keep your boat looking clean and ready to show off. Continue to do this regularly throughout the season.
