A colonoscopy is an important procedure for detecting and treating colon and gastrointestinal cancer. Health care professionals can take a live look into your GI tract with a camera, and you need to properly prepare so they have the best view. There are key steps to follow, so use the ones below alongside the clinic or hospital’s advice.

Your Guide to Colonoscopy Prep

1. Eat Less Fiber

health careYou’ll need to empty your bowels leading up to the colonoscopy so the health care professional has a clear look. You can naturally do this by eating less fiber in the days before.  Avoid whole grains, beans and legumes, and fiber-rich vegetables like broccoli. Following the colonoscopy, you can slowly reintroduce them to aid digestion.

2. Take the Prep

You’ll also need to take a laxative prescribed by your health care professional. This ensures your body doesn’t hold any stool. Plan on being near a bathroom, as it will cause diarrhea. You’ll need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and stick to easy-to-digest foods like broth, liquidy foods, and smoothies.

3. Clean Carefully

All of the wiping during the prep stages can irritate and cause discomfort. You need to clean slowly and carefully with plush toilet paper or wet wipes. Avoid any scented wipes, as they may cause irritation. You can also rub petroleum jelly on the area to protect the skin. Speak with your doctor about preferred products before using any. This will ensure they can easily perform the procedure when the day comes.
