There are many factors to consider when planning a loved one’s memorial service. Taking the time to personalize the event will give friends and family members the opportunity to reflect on fond memories with the deceased. As you prepare for their service, here are a few ways to incorporate a personal touch.

5 Ways to Make a Memorial Service More Individualized

1. Play a Beloved Song

In traditional funerals, hymns can be sung or played by the church organist in honor of the person who has passed. During celebrations of life or memorial services, however, you might consider having a special secular song played by your family member’s favorite musician. You could also play your loved one’s favorite genre of music during the service as well.

2. Incorporate Their Favorite Flowers

Florals such as lilies, carnations, and roses are often displayed at funerals and memorial services to represent grief, mourning, and love. But you don’t have to stick with traditional flowers. If there was a special plant or color your family member preferred, consider spotlighting these in custom arrangements.

3. Make a Tribute Video or Collage

Collect family photos, professional portraits, and other meaningful pictures from your loved one’s life for this project. You can also incorporate memorabilia depicting their hobbies or passions, such as sports teams, lighthouses, or pictures of pets.

4. Provide a Small Token

Some individuals choose to offer a token to give guests something to remember the deceased by. For instance, if your family member enjoyed gardening, consider giving seed packets to help their memory live on in a special way. If they liked to cook, you could hand out a printed card with their favorite recipe.

5. Perform a Personalized Reading

If your loved one had a favorite author or poet, consider reading a passage or line from one of their works. The reading can be performed on its own or incorporated into a eulogy. You might also consider printing a meaningful quote from this writer on prayer cards or similar print-outs.
