When it comes to a house painting project, it doesn’t matter whether you are painting the inside or the outside of your home; you want a great-looking result that will stand the test of time. For quality results, however, choosing the right type of paint matters. This means understanding the differences between interior and exterior paint.

How Are Interior & Exterior Paint Similar?

At a basic level, interior and exterior paint are both comprised of a base solvent—typically either water or oil. The addition of pigments, additives, and resins give the paint its unique color and attributes. Both options can use similar pigments and solvents to achieve the desired look. However, this is where the similarities end.

How Are They Different?

house paintingInterior and exterior paints will use different resins and additives to ensure they’re properly suited for an application. Since interior and exterior walls are exposed to different environments, different resins are needed to ensure proper, lasting binding. The resins used for exterior house painting, for instance, help the paint withstand frequent changes in temperature, as well as exposure to moisture.

Additives distinguish interior and exterior paints. Interior paints often use additives that make them more resistant to food splatters and scuff marks; these additives also make the paint easier to clean or remove, as you are more likely to update or clean your indoor walls. Exterior additives can provide protection against ultraviolet rays or even incorporate certain pesticides; however, these additives make most exterior paints unsafe for indoor applications.
