Losing someone close to you is an emotional experience, and as such, it can be hard to determine how to best present yourself during a funeral service. While it’s entirely appropriate to grieve with loved ones over the loss, there are also rules of etiquette that guests should follow to show respect for the family, as well as the deceased. If you’re planning on attending a funeral, here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind.

5 Funeral Etiquette Tips

1. Choose the Right Outfit

funeralBlack attire—such as dresses and suits—are traditionally viewed as the proper items to wear to a funeral. However, it’s also acceptable to wear other types of conservative colors—such as navy blue and gray items. You should also take care to minimize the amount of skin you show, so as not to draw attention to yourself.

2. Speak With Sympathy & Support

Knowing what to say to bereaved family members is a common challenge for those attending funerals. In general, simple statements work best—such as “I’m sorry for your loss.” In many cases, a loving hug is all that is needed. At the same time, avoid any inappropriate conversations that review the death or implicate how the bereaved feel.

3. Offer Suitable Gifts

One of the best ways to convey your sympathy is to offer a floral arrangement to the deceased’s family. When selecting a bouquet, only use flowers that are acceptable for a funeral—such as lilies, roses, and chrysanthemums. If flowers don’t feel right, a heartfelt card or home-cooked meal may also be welcome.

4. Let the Family Sit Up Front

If you’re not immediately related to the deceased, it’s best to leave the first front rows for family members. If there is no room in the back rows, standing may also be an acceptable option.

5. Know When to Leave Kids at Home

Children of any age may benefit from attending a funeral if they were close to the deceased, as it is considered an important part of the grieving process. However, if the child wasn’t close or is too young to behave politely, it may be better to hire a babysitter. Whenever you do bring a child, explain the experience to them in simple terms so they can know what to expect and decide if they want to go.
