If you’ve ever been driving in the rain and lost control of your vehicle, you know the sudden, tingling panic that can flow from your fingers to your toes. Hydroplaning is what happens when your tires lose their grip on the road and skid on a thin layer of water. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to mitigate this risk and stay safe while driving, despite the weather.

3 Tips for Avoiding Hydroplaning in the Rain

1. Keep Up With Tire Maintenance

Since tire tread is responsible for traction, you can avoid hydroplaning by keeping an eye on the rubber grooves. For starters, have your tires changed before the tread thins below 2/32 of an inch. It’s smart to get your tires inspected every time you get an oil change to check for this measurement. To help maintain even tread, most technicians also recommend rotating your tires every 5,000 miles or so. Additionally, keep an eye on tire pressure, as underinflated tires can decrease traction and increase the risk of a blowout.

2. Drive Smart

tiresIf there’s heavy rain in the forecast and you don’t need to be driving, stay home. If you’re already on the road when a heavy storm hits, pull off to the shoulder, or rest at a gas station until it passes. However, if you can’t wait out the storm, avoid puddles or other areas of standing water.

3. Stay Alert

If the rain starts pouring on a road trip, it’s time to forget about your car’s built-in luxuries and get serious about your driving. Turn off distractions like the radio, and disengage cruise control to retain complete control over your vehicle’s speed. As you drive, keep at least three to four car lengths between your bumper and the car in front of you — this will allow you to brake slowly if someone stops short, as slamming on the brakes can increase the risk of skidding and hydroplaning.
