When selecting home furnishings, it’s essential to have a color scheme in mind to give you a place to start the search. However, many people are unsure how to select these hues and which work well with one another.  Here are four tips to follow that will make the process easy and fun.

How to Create a Color Scheme for Your Interior Decor

1. Stick With a Temperature

Consider beginning the color selection process by deciding between warm and cool colors. Warm options include red, orange, yellow and all the shades in between, while cold ranges from blue and black to purple. Cool colors create spaciousness in a small room, and warm hues can make a bigger space feel cozier.

2. Pick a Focal Piece

home furnishingsDo you already have a piece of artwork or furniture that you want to place in the room as a focal piece? Choose hues that work with that item. For example, a red, yellow, and blue painting of your dog would work best with neutral home furnishings to draw people’s attention to the image. You could also select a key pattern, like a large, purple and white gingham, and theme the room around the hues found in the design.

3. Go Dark to Light

Every color has a value, which is the amount of light or darkness. To make a space appear larger, place dark items near beams or light fixtures. Place medium value hues in the middle for your home furnishings and then use the lightest tones on the floor as rugs, carpeting, or other flooring options.

4. Use Complimentary Hues

Complimentary colors are found directly across from one another on the color wheel and provide contrasting hues that pair well with each other. Pick one, and then see what’s across from it on the wheel. Use these two options to start your interior design theme. For example, a navy blue couch would compliment orange pillow, or a yellow wallpaper would bring out the brightness of a violet curtain.
