Tooth extraction is sometimes the best way to deal with a badly damaged or infected tooth. However, you'll need to plan some time for recovery in order to help your mouth heal afterward. Here's what you can expect, as well as a few tips to help your recovery go smoothly.

Tips for Recovering from Tooth Extraction

1. Take Time Off

After a tooth extraction, you won't be able to return to work immediately. Take at least a day off for recovery, and limit your activity during the next few days. This includes exercise, as too much exertion or heavy lifting can increase bleeding.

2. Eat Soft Foods

Tooth ExtractionYou won't want to chew much for the first few days. Eat things like yogurt, applesauce, ice cream, mashed potatoes, and soup. You can also try eating a very soft casserole or meatloaf.

3. Don't Use a Straw

After your dentist removes your tooth, a small blood clot forms in the empty socket. This clot is an essential part of the healing process, and sucking on anything can dislodge it. Don't use a straw, smoke, or eat hard candy until the tooth socket has healed.

4. Prop Your Head Up

Keep your head elevated with more than one pillow when you rest. This makes it easier for your body to drain fluid from the extraction site, relieving some pressure and swelling and making your recovery more comfortable.

5. Use a Cold Compress

Expect some swelling as you recover from your tooth extraction. To help minimize it, hold an ice pack to the side of your face for a few minutes at a time. Make sure to take breaks; ice constricts the blood vessels, and blood flow is important for healing.
